  • TASTING TABLE – BEST JEWISH DELIS

Tasting Table posted their opinion of the best Jewish Delis in the US. Stating "There's nothing quite like the Jewish deli: the smell of salty smoked meats...the brisk buzzing atmosphere." They go on to say that  delicatessens were first started in the US by Jewish Eastern European immigrants in the 1840s, who brought traditional foods and incorporated kosher laws. This is true for the Shapiro family with the exception of the timing. Louis and Rebecca Shapiro, with their six children fled religious persecution from Odessa, Ukraine. After registering at Ellis Island, they made their way to Indiana and ultimately Indianapolis. Beginning with what I call INDY'S FIRST FOOD TRUCK, they progressed to a grocery and then delicatessen. Serving hot meals when prohibition ended our menu was born! Tasting Table lists Shapiro's Delicatessen, the countries single family owned oldest deli in America, in their line up of favorite Jewish Delis. https://www.tastingtable.com/956737/best-jewish-delis-in-the-us/
