  • SHAPIRO’S DELI COVID TESTS STAFF, THINKS ALL RESTAURANTS SHOULD

Channel 8 WISH TV stopped by the Shapiro's parking lot this week to watch employees being tested for the Corona virus. Brian Shapiro, fourth generation owner of the 115 year old Indianapolis landmark, personally paid for testing for all of his employees that weren't laid off during the Covid 19 pandemic. But won't know the results due to HIPAA regulations. Says Shapiro, "Most of our staff has worked at Shapiro's for a dozen years. Our VP of Ops has been with us for 37 years and we had two cooks in the kitchen that both retired after 50 years each. I (Covid) tested them to keep them safe as well as our customers!" Shapiro is hopeful that he'll get reimbursed by either his insurance or through the federal Paycheck Protection Program. "I hope this sets an example for all Indy restaurants to test their employees so that everyone knows their health before customers come in their restaurant. It's the right thing to do." He hopes that Mayor Joe Hogsett loosens restrictions as soon as he feels it is safe.
